Even if you’re watching your budget, you can still enjoy a romantic evening in Albuquerque.
The Duke City has plenty of free or inexpensive date options to offer.
Get to Know a Different Neighborhood
Albuquerque has many neighborhoods and it’s likely you haven’t spent time in all of them. We all tend to hang out in our own neighborhoods and rarely venture off into an unknown part of town. But visiting a different neighborhood can make for a fun, romantic evening. You don’t have to spend a bunch of money.
Check out funky neighborhood cafés, enjoy new-to-you local parks, or try local coffee shops in a different part of town. Poke around in boutiques or other local stores — if you don’t buy anything, this suggestion is free. If you’re not sure where to start, check out this guide to Albuquerque neighborhoods and pick one to visit.
Stroll Through Old Town
Did you know that Albuquerque can trace its roots back more than 300 years ago when Old Town was founded? During your visit to Old Town, stroll hand-in-hand while visiting shops, galleries, and historic buildings.
Try to find as many murals as you can. Without spending a dime, imagine how an iconic Native American or Southwestern-themed painting might look in your home. As the shops close their doors, look for a little café where you can sample the local cuisine, and top off your romantic evening with a cold one at a craft brew pub.
Visit a Food Hall
A food hall like Sawmill Market can be a fun way to spend a casual, inexpensive evening. Get appetizers at one place, entrees at another, and dessert at a different place. It gives you a chance to try different cuisines while you walk around and enjoy each other’s company.
Have cocktails, mocktails, or just a cup of coffee. This inexpensive date night is good for couples just getting to know each other or those who have spent years together. If your budget doesn’t allow for all the sampling that you want to do, plan your return visit to round out the food hall offerings.
Watch a Romantic Sunset

Enjoying the sunset together is absolutely free. Grab your significant other and spend the evening together at the top of a mountain or a local park. While there are plenty of places to view the beautiful sunsets in Albuquerque, if you drive up the Sandia Crest Scenic Byway you can see the sunset on The Duke City from 10,678 feet. The drive to the top is about 14 miles.
Closer to town, West Bluff Park is located on a plateau that provides sunset views over the Rio Grande, downtown Albuquerque, and the Manzano Mountains. Sit together on one of many benches and watch the sun go down while enjoying each other’s company.
If you’re early birds, watch the sunrise instead. If you’re lucky you might get to see some hot air balloons dotting the skies just after the sun comes up.. How romantic is that?
Get Takeout and Watch a Movie at Home
Going to the movies can be pricey and that’s before you get snacks and drinks. But many movies are available to stream in the comfort of your home, and the rental price is less than the cost of one ticket at your local multiplex.
Get takeout from a new place or your favorite restaurant and pick a movie you’ll both enjoy. To really hit your budget goals, cook a fun, easy meal together and then relax on the sofa for an inexpensive, but romantic, movie night — popcorn optional.
Attend a Gallery Opening
The first showing of artwork in a gallery typically includes complimentary food and beverages, and often features live music. These exhibitions are usually open to the public at no cost, and attendance doesn’t require that you know the artist. While there’s no dress code for gallery openings, most attendees dress in casual but nice attire. It might be fun to dress up a bit and make the evening even more romantic.
This date night takes some planning. Check a week or so in advance to see which galleries have opening nights. Whether you’re an art aficionado or a complete novice, this can be a fun evening. Hang around and look at art for as long as you like; then hit a food truck on the way home.
Have a Picnic
Picnics aren’t just for lunch. Head to your local park, the Sandia Mountains, or the trails along the Rio Grande. Make it as laid back or elaborate as you want. Take along some small chairs and a little table — with a tablecloth of course — or spread a blanket on the ground. You can even sit side-by-side on a park bench and nosh on your favorite picnic food. Don’t forget dessert!
