A romantic date means different things to different couples. For some it’s a big night out, dressed to the nines, but for others it might mean donning your hiking boots and your best T-shirt. If the great outdoors brings you closer to your loved one, here are some ideas for connecting with your partner in and around Albuquerque.
Visit Some Parks in Albuquerque
Wherever you live in Duke City, you can be sure there’s a neighborhood park nearby. Parks aren’t just for kids. Depending on the outdoor activities that you enjoy, you can find tennis courts, pickleball courts, skate parks, basketball courts, places to stroll, or parks for a picnic. You might find the perfect date park in the Northeast Heights or Nob Hill or in one of these six popular Albuquerque parks.
Take a Hike
For couples who enjoy fresh air and awe-inspiring views, a pleasant hike together is a fun, romantic date. Albuquerque has an abundance of hiking trails. Some of the most popular hikes are near the foothills of the Sandia Mountains. There are plenty of wilderness trails to choose from, too. Less strenuous hikes can be found in town. Casually walk along urban trails while spending time together outdoors.
Go Star Gazing
You might need to head out of town a bit for this romantic date in the great outdoors. Two nearby ideas for stargazing are Cerrillos Hills State Park and near the town of Placitas. You can go out on your own, with or without a telescope, or join the local astronomy club at one of their outings. Albuquerque has a large and active astronomy club with more than 700 members and regular events. They welcome guests at their events. Take some hot cocoa and snacks, and maybe pack a blanket if it’s chilly out.
Ride Bikes Together
From casual city bike paths to intense mountain biking trails, Albuquerque has you covered if your idea of romance is biking together. For the more casual rider, try renting a bike in town and cycling around, stopping at coffee shops with patios. Or head over to nearby Rio Rancho to sample the hiking and biking trails in that area. Biking is a fun way to be together and, with a little planning, it can turn out to be a romantic date in the great outdoors.
Go Rock Climbing
If an urban stroll is too sedate for you and your partner, try rock climbing. The Sandia Mountain Foothills Open Space has ample boulders to test your rock climbing skills as does the Jemez Wilderness. Take your gear and turn scrambling up a mountain wall into the perfect romantic date.
Whether you’re avid birders or just beginning this lifetime adventure, sharing nature and learning about the birds in your area can be romantic for some couples. Albuquerque and the surrounding areas are home to many bird species. Getting a “lifer” — a bird you’ve never seen before — is an exciting thing to share with your loved one. Near Albuquerque, the Sandia Peak Ski Area has 25 miles of slopes to explore. If you’re willing to drive a bit, there are more ski areas near Santa Fe and other parts of New Mexico. After a day of hitting the slopes, end your romantic date in the outdoors with a hot drink in front of the fire.
Take a Road Trip
A pleasant road trip is the perfect way to enjoy getting out together. Take a picnic or snacks, or find a restaurant somewhere along the way. A beautiful drive with stops at overlooks or roadside picnic areas can be a laid-back, romantic date for almost any couple.
