Nature
Albuquerque may be New Mexico’s largest city, but it still has plenty of open space where you can explore nature. Whether you’re drawn to the allure of rugged terrains or the serene beauty of the bosque, Albuquerque provides a full experience of natural environments.
The city’s extensive trail system provides countless opportunities to explore the unique desert flora and fauna. Hikers and cyclists alike find solace in winding paths that traverse mesas, dip into lush valleys, and scale the mountain heights, offering panoramic views that encapsulate the region’s beauty. Along the banks of the Rio Grande, birdwatchers are treated to a symphony of avian life, especially during migration seasons. You can also visit places like the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, which is a 38-acre urban wildlife preserve with interesting exhibits and a special indoor viewing room with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the water.
If you’re new to the upper Sonoran Desert zone, exploring nature in Albuquerque brings opportunities to see roadrunners, coyotes, Gambel’s quail, javelinas, prairies dogs, horned toads and other distinctive desert residents. Albuquerque sports a wide variety of grasses, yucca, sagebrush, cholla and other desert flora amidst black volcanic rocks. Its higher elevations support juniper and sparse growths of piñon. It is a nature lover’s dream destination.
All in all, Albuquerque is a playground for nature lovers. Situated between the stunning Sandia Mountains and the life-giving Rio Grande, this city is all about awesome outdoor experiences. Whether you’re into hiking, cycling, birdwatching, or just soaking in the spectacular scenery, Albuquerque has it all.
