Central to New Mexico’s traditions are the celebrations of Feast Days in Pueblos across the state, where Indigenous communities come together to renew their culture, language and native religion in dances, songs, and ceremonies.

For visitors, open Feast days offer a glimpse into ancient rituals and beliefs which carry on today, and many Pueblos open some of their feast days to the public to welcome different cultures to understand one another and honor the spirits together.

Beyond feast days, countless festivals, dances, and arts and crafts fairs occur throughout the year, exemplifying and celebrating the state’s diverse heritage. For example, the enticing aroma of roasting green chiles filling the Albuquerque air in autumn unforgettably heralds the coming of fall harvests, the end of summer and the coming of winter.

The lighting of farolitos, also known as luminarias, occurs throughout the seasons, but ceremonially during the Christmas and Winter holidays. These are delicate paper lanterns that grace homes and streets during the season, casting a warm and inviting glow that speak of hospitality and togetherness.
